Idhas-samaa'unshaqqat

When the sky has split [open]

Wa'adhinat lirabbihaa wahuqqat

And has listened [i.e., responded] to its Lord and was obligated [to do so]

  1. It will have heard Allāh's command and will have inclined immediately to compliance and willing obedience.

Wa'idhal-ardu muddat

And when the earth has been extended

  1. i.e., stretched flat and spread out.

Wa'alqat maa feehaa watakhallat

And has cast out that within it and relinquished [it]

  1. Of the dead and all else buried therein.

Wa'adhinat lirabbihaa wahuqqat

And has listened [i.e., responded] to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] –

Yaa ayyuhal-insaanu innaka kaadihun ilaa rabbika kadhan famulaaqeeh

O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it.

  1. i.e., striving throughout your life until you meet your Lord, hastening toward death.
  2. i.e., you will find all that you intended and accomplished awaiting you in the Hereafter. Another meaning is "And will meet Him [i.e., your Lord]" and be recompensed in full by Him.

Fa'ammaa man ootiya kitaabahoo biyameenih

Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand,

Fasawfa yuhaasabu hisaabay yaseeraa

He will be judged with an easy account

Wayanqalibu ilaa ahlihee masrooraa

And return to his people in happiness.

Wa'ammaa man ootiya kitaabahoo waraa'a zahrih

But as for he who is given his record behind his back,

Fasawfa yad`oo thubooraa

He will cry out for destruction

Wayaslaa sa`eeraa

And [enter to] burn in a Blaze.

Innahoo kaana fee ahlihee masrooraa

Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness;

Innahoo zanna al lay yahoor

Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allāh].

Balaa inna rabbahoo kaana bihee baseeraa

But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever, of him, Seeing.

Falaa uqsimu bish-shafaq

So I swear by the twilight glow

Wal-layli wamaa wasaq

And [by] the night and what it envelops

Wal-qamari idhattasaq

And [by] the moon when it becomes full

Latarkabunna tabaqan `an tabaq

[That] you will surely embark upon [i.e., experience] state after state.

  1. i.e., various stages, both in this life and in the Hereafter.

Famaa lahum laa yu'minoon

So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe,

84:21 ۩ Sajdah

Wa'idhaa quri'a `alayhimul-qur'aanu laa yasjudoon

And when the Qur’ān is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allāh]?

Balil-ladheena kafaroo yukadhdhiboon

But those who have disbelieved deny,

Wallaahu a`lamu bimaa yoo`oon

And Allāh is most knowing of what they keep within themselves.

Fabashshirhum bi`adhaabin aleem

So give them tidings of a painful punishment,

Illal-ladheena aamanoo wa`amilus-saalihaati lahum ajrun ghayru mamnoon

Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.
