Wan-najmi idhaa hawaa

By the star when it descends,

Maa dalla saahibukum wamaa ghawaa

Your companion [i.e., Muḥammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,

Wamaa yantiqu `anil-hawaa

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.

In huwa illaa wahyuy yoohaa

It is not but a revelation revealed,

`Allamahoo shadeedul-quwaa

Taught to him by one intense in strength [i.e., Gabriel] -

Dhoo mirrah, fastawaa

One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form

  1. i.e., strength of body and of mind.
  2. Gabriel appeared to Muḥammad (ﷺ) at the outset of his prophethood in the angelic form in which Allāh originally created him.

Wahuwa bil-ufuqil-a`laa

While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.

  1. i.e., in the sky, above the eastern horizon.

Thumma danaa fatadallaa

Then he approached and descended

Fakaana qaaba qawsayni aw adnaa

And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.

Fa'awhaa ilaa `abdihee maa awhaa

And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed [i.e., conveyed].

  1. i.e., to the Servant of Allāh, Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ).

Maa kadhabal-fu'aadu maa ra'aa

The heart did not lie [about] what it saw.

  1. i.e., mind or perception (of the Prophet [ﷺ]).

Afatumaaroonahoo `alaa maa yaraa

So will you dispute with him over what he saw?

Walaqad ra'aahu nazlatan ukhraa

And he certainly saw him in another descent

  1. i.e., on another occasion. During his ascent into the heavens (al-Miʿrāj), the Prophet (ﷺ) also saw Gabriel in his true form.

`Inda sidratil-muntahaa

At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -

`Indahaa jannatul-ma'waa

Near it is the Garden of Refuge [i.e., Paradise] -

Idh yaghshas-sidrata maa yaghshaa

When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].

  1. Then and there he (ﷺ) saw Gabriel in angelic form.

Maa zaaghal-basaru wamaa taghaa

The sight [of the Prophet (ﷺ)] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].

Laqad ra'aa min aayaati rabbihil-kubraa

He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.

Afara'aytumullaata wal-`uzzaa

So have you considered al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā?

Wamanaatath-thaalithatal-ukhraa

And Manāt, the third - the other one?

  1. The three names given in this and the previous verse are those of well-known "goddesses" which were worshipped by the pagan Arabs before the spread of Islām.

Alakumudh-dhakaru walahul-unthaa

Is the male for you and for Him the female?

Tilka idhan qismatun deezaa

That, then, is an unjust division.

  1. According to their own standards.

In hiya illaa asmaa'un sammaytumoohaa antum wa'aabaa'ukum maa anzalallaahu bihaa min sultaan, iy yattabi`oona illaz-zanna wamaa tahwal-anfus, walaqad jaa'ahum mir rabbihimul-hudaa

They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allāh has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.

Am lil-insaani maa tamannaa

Or is there for man whatever he wishes?

Falillaahil-aakhiratu wal-oolaa

Rather, to Allāh belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].

Wakam mim malakin fis-samaawaati laa tughnee shafaa`atuhum shay'an illaa mim ba`di ay ya'dhanallaahu limay yashaa'u wayardaa

And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allāh has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.

Innal-ladheena laa yu'minoona bil-aakhirati layusammoonal-malaa'ikata tasmiyatal-unthaa

Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names,

Wamaa lahum bihee min `ilm, iy yattabi`oona illaz-zanna wa'innaz-zanna laa yughnee minal-haqqi shay'aa

And they have thereof no knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all.

Fa'a`rid `am man tawallaa `an dhikrinaa walam yurid illal-hayaatad-dunyaa

So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life.

Dhaalika mablaghuhum minal-`ilm, inna rabbaka huwa a`lamu biman dalla `an sabeelihee wahuwa a`lamu bimanihtadaa

That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.

Walillaahi maa fis-samaawaati wamaa fil-ard, liyajziyal-ladheena asaa'oo bimaa `amiloo wayajziyal-ladheena ahsanoo bil-husnaa

And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] -

Alladheena yajtaniboona kabaa'iral-ithmi wal-fawaahisha illal-lamama inna rabbaka waasi`ul-maghfirah, huwa a`lamu bikum idh ansha'akum minal-ardi wa'idh antum ajinnatun fee butooni ummahaatikum, falaa tuzakkoo anfusakum, huwa a`lamu bimanittaqaa

Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.

Afara'aytal-ladhee tawallaa

Have you seen the one who turned away

Wa'a`taa qaleelaw wa'akdaa

And gave a little and [then] refrained?

A`indahoo `ilmul-ghaybi fahuwa yaraa

Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?

  1. Knows that his provision will be exhausted if he spends on the poor, while Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) has promised otherwise.

Am lam yunabba' bimaa fee suhufi moosaa

Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses

Wa'ibraaheemal-ladhee waffaa

And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] -

Allaa taziru waaziratuw wizra ukhraa

That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another

Wa'al laysa lil-insaani illaa maa sa`aa

And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives

Wa'anna sa`yahoo sawfa yuraa

And that his effort is going to be seen -

Thumma yujzaahul-jazaa'al-awfaa

Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense -

Wa'anna ilaa rabbikal-muntahaa

And that to your Lord is the finality

Wa'annahoo huwa adhaka wa'abkaa

And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep

Wa'annahoo huwa amaata wa'ahyaa

And that it is He who causes death and gives life

Wa'annahoo khalaqaz-zawjaynidh-dhakara wal-unthaa

And that He creates the two mates - the male and female -

Min nutfatin idhaa tumnaa

From a sperm-drop when it is emitted

Wa'anna `alayhin-nash'atal-ukhraa

And that [incumbent] upon Him is the other [i.e., next] creation.

Wathamooda famaa abqaa

Waqawma noohim min qabl, innahum kaanoo hum azlama wa'atghaa
