Was-saabihaati sabhaa

And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming

  1. Speeding to execute Allāh's commands.

Fal-mudabbiraati amraa

And those who arrange [each] matter,

  1. According to Allāh's decree.

Yawma tarjufur-raajifah

On the Day the blast [of the Horn] will convulse [creation],

Tatba`uhar-raadifah

There will follow it the subsequent [one].

Quloobuy yawma'idhiw waajifah

Hearts, that Day, will tremble,

  1. Those of the disbelievers who denied the Resurrection.

Absaaruhaa khaashi`ah

Their eyes humbled.

  1. Those of the disbelievers.

Yaqooloona a'innaa lamardoodoona fil-haafirah

They are [presently] saying, "Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state [of life]?

A'idhaa kunnaa `izaaman nakhirah

Even if we should be decayed bones?"

  1. The disbelievers say this in ridicule of the warning.

Qaaloo tilka idhan karratun khaasirah

They say, "That, then, would be a losing return."

  1. i.e., "If that were so, we would not be able to escape punishment."

Fa'innamaa hiya zajratuw waahidah

Indeed, it will be but one shout,

Fa'idhaa hum bis-saahirah

And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.

Hal ataaka hadeethu moosaa

Has there reached you the story of Moses? -

Idh naadaahu rabbuhoo bil-waadil-muqaddasi tuwaa

When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā,

Idhhab ilaa fir`awna innahoo taghaa

"Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.

Faqul hal laka ilaa an tazakkaa

And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself

Wa'ahdiyaka ilaa rabbika fatakhshaa

And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'"

And he showed him the greatest sign,

  1. i.e., the miracle of his staff becoming a great snake.

Fakadhdhaba wa`asaa

But he [i.e., Pharaoh] denied and disobeyed.

  1. An alternative meaning is "running [from the snake]."

Fahashara fanaadaa

And he gathered [his people] and called out

Faqaala ana rabbukumul-a`laa

And said, "I am your most exalted lord."

Fa'akhadhahullaahu nakaalal-aakhirati wal-oolaa

So Allāh seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression]..

  1. i.e., for Pharaoh's setting himself up as a deity and for his previous oppression of the people and denial of Moses.

Inna fee dhaalika la`ibratal limay yakhshaa

Indeed in that is a lesson [i.e., warning] for whoever would fear [Allāh].

A'antum ashaddu khalqan amis-samaa', banaahaa

Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He [i.e., Allāh] constructed it.

Rafa`a samkahaa fasawwaahaa

He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.

Wa'aghtasha laylahaa wa'akhraja duhaahaa

And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.

  1. i.e., created the day from within the surrounding darkness.

Wal-arda ba`da dhaalika dahaahaa

And after that He spread the earth.

Akhraja minhaa maa'ahaa wamar`aahaa

He extracted from it its water and its pasture,

Wal-jibaala arsaahaa

And the mountains He set firmly

Mataa`al lakum wali'an`aamikum

As enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.

Fa'idhaa jaa'atit-taammatul-kubraa

But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity -

  1. i.e., the Day of Resurrection.

Yawma yatadhakkarul-insaanu maa sa`aa

The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,

Waburrizatil-jaheemu limay yaraa

And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -

Fa'ammaa man taghaa

So as for he who transgressed

Wa'aatharal-hayaatad-dunyaa

And preferred the life of the world,

Fa'innal-jaheema hiyal-ma'waa

Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.

Wa'ammaa man khaafa maqaama rabbihee wanahan-nafsa `anil-hawaa

But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,

  1. See footnote to 55:46.

Fa'innal-jannata hiyal-ma'waa

Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.

Yas'aloonaka `anis-saa`ati ayyaana mursaahaa

They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?

  1. Literally, "resting" or "establishment."

Feema anta min dhikraahaa

In what [position] are you that you should mention it?

  1. Meaning that Muḥammad (ﷺ) had no knowledge of it, so how could he inform them?

Ilaa rabbika muntahaahaa

To your Lord is its finality.

  1. i.e., its destination and termination. And to Him belongs ultimate knowledge of it.

Innamaa anta mundhiru may yakhshaahaa

You are only a warner for those who fear it.
